8 The Marangu Route is the most popular, least difficult, and shortest way to Uhuru Peak compared to the Rongai Route. This route is also called the Tourist Route or the Coca-Cola Route. 70% of all climbers choose this route because most of the route consists of easy hiking. This route is fairly easy but the final part to the summit is still difficult. Although this route is the easiest, it has the highest failure rate due to bad preparation. It is advised to take this route seriously enough, to be well organized, and to take all possible safety measures.
8-Day Marangu Route The oldest route on Mount Kilimanjaro, the Marangu Route, is also known as the Tourist Route / Coca-Cola Route. You may have heard that the Marangu route is the easiest, cheapest and by far the most popular of all routes up Mt. Kilimanjaro.
All the camps on this route sell goods such as chocolates, beer, soft drinks, and mineral water, and they all have radio contact with the Park Office. This route can be done in 5 days, but it is advised to take an extra day for acclimatization at the Horombo hut, the only campsite on Kilimanjaro with beds and mattresses.
After breakfast, we will hike through the moorland and the alpine desert region of Mount Kilimanjaro. After hiking for about an hour we will encounter a small mountain stream called the Maua River.
Once you pass Maua you will notice that the terrain gets smoother and the vegetation starts to diminish. We will have an appetizing lunch at the Middle Red Hill. We will continue our trek shortly after lunch and spend the next four hours traveling to Kibo on a steady incline through Mount Kilimanjaro's Saddle.
The silver lining to traveling through a baron dessert is the breathtakingly stunning vista of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. You will reach the Kibo hut in the afternoon. It is recommended that you rest and prepare for your midnight climb.
On this final day on the mountain, you descend to Marangu gate, the exit of Kilimanjaro National Park. This is a wonderful five to six-hour walk through the beautiful forests of Kilimanjaro. Your guide then takes you to your hotel, where you get a well-deserved rest.
